Autism Awareness and Fundraising  Home

My sister- in -law Jill Miller, founder of CharityBear shared with you her story; my name is Shannon and I would like to share with you my experience with autism.

Autism is in epidemic proportions, 1 in 150 children are diagnosed everyday, boys outnumbering girls, my middle son in one of those boys. Thirteen years ago my 16 year old son was given the label "autistic" accompanied with limitations of educationally retarded and mental retardation. Unwilling to settle for such a diagnosis knowing that I had a very bright 3 year old, I began to research the truth about the disorder. I knew that if I had the right information and tools, I could help him overcome his challenges and live a happy productive life. I am thrilled to say that my son proved the opinions of educationally and mentally retarded WRONG!! Physicians today have better information about autism and are able to diagnose more accurately. Innovations in teaching methods and changes in nutrition for children living with autism make a big difference in their lives. My son continues to work on his challenges and gains independence and confidence with the help of his supportive family and friends. Changes in his diet, vitamins and heavy metal detox have greatly improved my sons ability to process information and allow him to function on a more "normal" level socially, closer to his peers. The truth about autism and the hope beyond diagnosis needs to be spread! More research must continue in order to find a way to stop this disorder in its tracks. There are a multitude of families living with autism of varying degrees who need support and education about how to begin freeing their children from autism. These children are awesome, usually extra-ordinarily bright and full of life!
